about
Our opening tune for our 1983 performances. Hugo Klang was assembled in London in 1980 by Ollie Olsen (v), John Murphy (perc and electronics), Tom Hoy (sax) and Harry Zantey (gtr) as core Australian members. The other members were Rob Haigh on bass,
Trevor Reidy on drums (English) and Rick Jacobs (American) on trumpet. The band released two 7" singles but not as this lineup recording. The singles were done independently by Ollie with varied assistance. They were The Wheel of Fat / Mouserunner on Au Go Go and Grand Life For Fools And Idiots / Beat Up The Old Shack on Prince Melon. An independently released live cassette was also released. Entitled The Final Akt the cassette captures the bands second iteration in Melbourne and their live ferocity but the audio quality is far from satisfactory. Personel for this version of the band were Ollie Olsen (vox, beats, space echo and trumpet), John Murphy (white noise / AKS), Tom Hoy, (sax), Alan Bamford (beats and musique concret backing) and Lawton Ellery (majik). Sound was mixed by Lindsay Greer and lights were done by Nicola Mangan. This band played a number of shows in 1983 before Ollie disbanded the outfit and moved on. The piece embedded here is from the second iteration of the band and was composed by Alan Bamford. Thanks and ++ respect to Simon Grounds for the use of his practise studio for the composition over one night of the musique concret backing sound.
